Recovering from Bone Graft Surgery

Posted .

Bone graft surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure restores bone structure to a sufficient level that it can anchor a dental implant or denture implant. It is often performed on an outpatient basis and requires deep sedation. Quality preparation and thoughtful aftercare can help speed your recovery.

Be sure to let your surgeon know about any medications you are taking or medical conditions at the initial appointment. Since you will be sedated, you will need to arrange to have a friend or family member drive you and help you at home while you’re getting back on your feet

If you use tobacco regularly, you should talk to your doctor in advance about a cessation program that fits your personal preference. Tobacco irritates gum tissues which increases healing time and can also cause infection in the gums as they heal. When picking a program try to look for one that doesn’t involve lozenges or nicotine gum as these can also irritate the gums.

You will need to eat a soft foods diet while you are recovering. So stocking up on soft foods you enjoy before the procedure will make things easier. Proper hydration is also very important. Try to drink plenty of lukewarm liquids and avoid using a straw. The suction can harm the incisions or pull blood clots loose.

It’s not uncommon for the incisions to weep a little blood for a few days after the surgery. If this happens, you should lightly pack the area with sterile gauze. Once the bleeding stops you can gently rinse your mouth with salt water to cleanse the area and soothe the gums.
