You Can Often Have a Broken Tooth Extracted and Restored by a Bridge

Posted .

Your tooth enamel is hard enough to enable you to chew and grind tough foods. Unfortunately, tooth enamel is not intended to absorb a powerful blow to the face or the force that result from a hard fall. Sometimes these situations can have such an impact that it cracks, fractures or severely damages the entire tooth.

Sometimes the damage can be so extensive that one of Dr. David Blake Lawlor, DDS, LLC’s dentists can’t even save the tooth with a root canal. This often calls for the damaged tooth to be completely extracted from the socket.

If the extracted tooth is not replaced in a relatively short order it can lead to other complications. In time the surrounding teeth might start to twist, turn and migrate to attempt to fill the gap. Alignment issues of this nature can actually lead to chips, fractures and further damage to the surrounding teeth.

This often prompts the dentist at Dr. David Blake Lawlor, DDS, LLC to recommend restoring the tooth with a bridge.

This common piece of dental work is essentially one single unit that is cemented onto crowns anchored on abutments formed from the two closest teeth.

During your first appointment, your Dr. David Blake Lawlor, DDS, LLC’s dentist will use a drill to remove the enamel from the two teeth. Then he will take an impression of the area, before covering the two abutments with temporary crowns. The impression will be sent on to a dental lab, to serve as a guide for crafting your bridge.

Once the bridge is ready, your dentist will remove the temporary crowns and cement your bridge onto the abutments.

If you have a cracked, fractured or otherwise broken tooth, you should call Dr. David Blake Lawlor, DDS, LLC’s office in Wichita, Kansas at 316-684-5511 for treatment and restoration.
